I don't mean to sound rude, but the problem isn't that OSX doesn't allow control, the problem is that you're not a knowledgeable user. There is no way to get Windows to run at full speed (or even decent speed) on a Mac, and there is no reason to use Apple hardware if you aren't paying the extra money for OSX.

As of firmware 1.1, there is no back light options for the 6th gen yet, perhaps in a future firmware release they will add it.

I second the heater function. The only problem I have is it takes some time to warm up. Yeah...that's in the room I SLEEP in.

By no problem, do you mean that you feel no difference between 10.6 an 10.7?
Well the cursor is not as fast as in Windows, but it's managable.

It means that the cursor movement is not linear to the mouse movement. Google it and you will see that it's a huge issue for people that want to game on their Macs, especially for Windows switchers that are not used to it. The worst part is that there is no setting in OS X to remove it.

Here are two images that illustrate it (from a 3rd party software that removes the acceleration)
Without this program: http://triq.net/files/gallery/snip2.png With this program: http://triq.net/files/gallery/snip1.png

I am begging Lion to have an option to turn mouse acceleration off. I've tried most of these 3rd party programs, and they don't really help. It really affects how well you can play RTSs and FPSs. Please, Apple, just give up an option like Windows does!

The Apple Store here is closing from 4-6 to get ready for the Leopard release. I can't see what they need 2 hours to get ready for.

During the iPhone launch, we had some hands-on and a meeting also.

Why not just use Migration Assistant? I used that to transition my wife from an old PowerBook G4 to a MacMini and it was really simple. There were a few quirks since the other was such an old computer using a PowerPC chip, but it made the whole process really simple. I'm now kicking myself for not doing that when I bought my MacPro back in 2009.

Noticed that when I booted up and then I saw your post. Excellent recommendations. I used the migration assistant and everything is transferring now.

Thanks again to you both. =D

I don't sync the contacts via iTunes anymore. There is some sync issue with the contacts that I couldn't solve, so we went to put his contacts in the cloud instead.

The issue is that despite the (exchange) contacts being synced over-the-air, when you save a contact in the iphone via the dialer/recent-calls, it goes into the iPhone's local contact list by default, instead of into the exchange group. :/

What model is the miniDV camcorder? Many (most?) of them have AV inputs, but most of them require a special cable that breaks out the RCA jacks. For example, my Sony cable looks like this (http://www.pickegg.com/wholesale/3-5mm-jack-to-3-rca-phono-lead-audio-video-av-cable-black.html).

Assuming you do have an AV input, and cable, then you can connect the VHSC output directly to the AV input from the miniDV camcorder. Then connect a Firewire cable from your camcorder to the Mac, and fire up iMovie (the older version, iMovie HD, is actually preferable, but you can capture with the newer versions too).

What you do next depends on the model of miniDV camcorder you have and whether it has "AV to DV pass through" capability (note: sometimes this is a setting that you have to turn on in the camcorder menus). If it does, then just start playing the VHSC tape, and you'll see the playback in iMovie and you can begin capturing right away.

If you don't have the passthrough capability, then you'll need to dub the VHSC tape to a miniDV tape, then rewind and playback the miniDV tape to get the output into iMovie.

If your DV camcorder doesn't do AV inputs, then you might also consider getting a USB video capture device that accepts input directly from RCA jacks. There are plenty of them around (like this one (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10810&cs_id=1081003&p_id=5616&seq=1&format=2)) but I don't know what the quality is like.

    Hurricanes are a "random" occurence.

    Prediction is impossible.

Next year can be less or far worse than this year. There is no telling. if it IS as bad next year as this year, we as a country are f*cked but thats what we get for living on planet earth I guess.

Get a helmet, hurricances are nothing like earthquakes. You know when a hurricane will hit welll in advance, making them not "disasters" in the same sense an earthquake is a disaster.

    I live in florida.

And while I will take anychance to bad motuh Dubbya, Global Warming from a scientific (NOT environmentalist) point of view cant be proven.

All the data on global warming is only a few decades old. And over GEOLOGICAL TIME, which is how weather and the way the Earth functions is measured, this is less than a fleeting moment.

So with that in mind, just cuz the last few years have been "hotter" doesnt mean that it will continue that way. As it stands you cant predict global warming anymore than you can predict the coming of the next ice age. It takes too long for permanent changes in the earths environment. How long did it take to go from methane and CO2 to a 28% oxygen atmosphere, ~BILLIONS of years. So 20-50yrs of "global warming" data isnt enough and never will be.

But it cant be ignored that greenhouse gases and all that toxic crap IS BAD FOR THE PLANET.

I would agree with 2tb.. I use the 2tb Hitchai 7200 rpm drives..I have not had luck with the western digital green drives.
I also seen the 2tb Hitchai drives work in the Xserve G5, Xserve and xserve 2009. My Xserve2006 was very flacky.

I do think the 3tb drives will work in the 2008 or newer xserve, but I have not tested it. I will report back on that

oh my god, superdirve and bluetooth?

who ever thought of that as a rumor for the upcoming powerbook:p

macworld had a thing on bluetooth being the future for the next generation macs and there must be dozens of posters here calling for a superdrive in a powerbook

these things probably all need to happen before we see either a dual G4 powerbook or, later on, a G5 powerbook

i don't want to wait til late-2003 or early-2004 to get bluetooth and superdrive as a new thing when the G5 powerbook most likely will be announced, if they even call the post-g4 laptop that

Every user already has a standard drop box in their user's public folder.
It uses a generic folder icon. Maybe someone finally got around to giving it a decent icon?

I guess it hasn't been moved up a level in to the user folder proper?
It's always been odd that drop box was in the public folder but sites wasn't.
I was sort of hoping the whole shared user/user public/sites/ drop box might have gotten a bit of a rethink now that air drop is being added to the mix.

Is this going to be your first DSLR?

I think if you really want that lens and no other will do, see if your parents are able to stretch to the brand new kit.

But you're looking at a really capable body though, if it was me, I'd get it with a kit lens like the regular 18-55 and a copy of Aperture (if you have a Mac, I'm saying Aperture because you could probably keep those parts all down below 500).

The lenses should last you for decades as long as you keep them cared for and you don't need to have the exact lens you want straight off. You'll be able to save for a new lens or ask family if they could perhaps chip in for it later.

Also, just because you're getting Nikon, doesn't mean you have to be restricted to their lenses, you can get Tamron and Sigma lenses for good prices too.

Backstory - I ran the service department for a small regional computer chain in the mid 80s and Apple was our main brand. While I was there, I brought home this banner and poster and have dragged them along with me everywhere I've gone for 25 years.

Now I'm curious about them. I've searched eBay but don't see any similar for sale. Does anyone here recognize these? Any idea what they might be worth?

    ...thanks...

In OS X you can literally control just about any aspect of the the operating system via terminal. I would argue that an expert *nix user has more "unrestricted control" over OS X than an expert windows user can have under XP.

I'm getting ready to head to Florida with my kids and wife. I am so looking forward to this vacation.

I just totaled up my hours that I worked for the past two months. I've worked 7 days a week 70+ hours of work for the past 2 months. This week I've started working at 6:00am, and finishing up at 11:00pm (with a break for lunch and making dinner).

What do you do for work and why?

Kidding aside, enjoy and try not to work on your vacation!
